Identification of stratigraphic formation interfaces using wavelet and Fourier transforms

چکیده
The purpose of this study was to identify the formation interfaces from geophysical well log data using the wavelet transform, and a combination of the wavelet transform and the Fourier transform methods. In the wavelet transform method, the identification of formation interfaces is based on the wavelet coefficients from the wavelet transform of spontaneous potential (SP) log and gamma ray (GR) log data. In the combination of the wavelet transform and the Fourier transform methods, the wavelet transform, spectrum analysis, and logarithmic transform of well logs were applied to the SP and GR log data successively to obtain clear signals for identifying the stratigraphic formation interface. In this study, a set of ideal log data was first created and analyzed to test the validity of the developed procedures. In analyzing the SP and GR logs from a field, both the wavelet transform method and conventional well log analysis showed similar results. The results from a combination of the wavelet transform and the Fourier transform methods, however, were better than those from the wavelet transform method and the conventional well log analysis. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Detecting Stratigraphic Discontinuities using Wavelet and S-Transform Analysis of Well Log Data
Detecting stratigraphic discontinuities using well log data is a fundamental task in petroleum geosciences projects. Wavelet transforms (WT) and S-transform (ST) of well log data can provide objective identification of lithological interfaces to aid in this effort. The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) of a time series gives the wavelet correlation coefficients (i.e. similarity) between the gi...
متن کاملFormation interface detection using Gamma Ray log: A novel approach
There are two methods for identifying formation interface in oil wells: core analysis, which is a precise approach but costly and time consuming, and well logs analysis, which petrophysists perform, which is subjective and not completely reliable. In this paper, a novel coupled method was proposed to detect the formation interfaces using GR logs. Second approximation level (a2) of GR log gained...
متن کاملClassical Wavelet Transforms over Finite Fields
This article introduces a systematic study for computational aspects of classical wavelet transforms over finite fields using tools from computational harmonic analysis and also theoretical linear algebra. We present a concrete formulation for the Frobenius norm of the classical wavelet transforms over finite fields. It is shown that each vector defined over a finite field can be represented as...
متن کاملRegion Completion in a Texture using Multiresolution Transforms
Abstract Natural images, textures and photographs are likely to be impaired by stains. As a result a substantial portion of the image remains blurred. However, a method called region completion is adopted to fill in the tainted part by using the information from the portion left unblemished by stains. A novel method to perform this operation is proposed in this paper. The three significant sta...
